The story of Ananias and Sapphira is a jarring one. It’s a story that takes place in the early church, and it’s also the first time the word “church” is used. It’s a story where a community marked by openness, honesty, and selflessness is invaded by secrecy & lies in the service of selfishness. God’s response is to do a God-sized thing…he removes the life (that he had given) from the two participants in this invasion. When we read this story, we often are shocked, fearful, and move on. The early church was shocked and fearful too…but this turned into growth and power that still reverberates. That’s why this story is important for us today as we need to grapple with continued attempts to invade God’s church with the enemy’s lies. Listen and hear the immense and passionate love God has for his church and how God will still protect it today.
