Micah and His Homemade Religion

Micah and His Homemade Religion

If’n we are being honest with ourselves, we all want to make deals with God. (Even the young Martin Luther made a deal with God!) These deals can range from the benign to the bad. The point isn’t the deals, it’s the thinking behind trying to make deals with God. It exposes that often we think of God in transactional instead of relational terms…maybe like God is our employer, or a cosmic vending machine…anything but a all-powerful Father who cares deeply about his children.
If not nipped in the bud through God’s word and Spirit, this transactional thinking has devastating consequences. This is illustrated in the story from the book of Judges about Micah and his homemade religion. Micah mixed worship of God our Father with worship of idols…and if this does not seem to be a story ripped from today’s era, it is time to look around!¬†True freedom only comes in knowing God relationally through his son Jesus.
