When we become believers, it’s more than mere intellectual assent to things we hope are true. We submit ourselves to Jesus as our Lord and our Savior. We are his, and his alone. That’s why we read his words, the Bible. Since they are his words, they guide us and guard us. So far, so good. But the words in the Bible aren’t like other words. The Bible says it is THE Word, and is inspired by the Holy Spirit. Though written by men, it is the very words and Word of God.
Since God is, well, God, reading and believing his words actually changes us. It goes beyond assent and intellect, down to our heart level and reorients even the things we have affection for. Instead of things that fail, we begin to take delight in things that last (and nothing lasts longer than God!) That’s what this message from the book of James is, a plea for us to implant the Word of God deep within us. Listen and be transformed by the holy Spirit as we sing, pray, praise, and hear the very words of God.
