  • Connect together as a Church body as we continue 40 days in prayer for the Lovern gift through April 16. Pick up a prayer guide Sunday, it’s not too late to join in!
  • Grow in understanding how we point generations to Jesus in our Discovering FBC class at either 9:15 or 10:50 am this Sunday!
  • Go from Sunday School or worship down to the fellowship hall and learn how to reach the nations right here at UVa when we have a lunch connecting you with International Students this Sunday!
The Tie comes out each week on Thursdays to let the whole Church family know what’s happening on Sunday and beyond at FBC. Just in case you’ve missed it thus far, THIS SUNDAY IS DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME!

From your Pastor….

Church Family,

On Wednesday, March 8th we launched 40 Days of Prayer, focusing on “Team Lois” and a plan to utilize the Lovern Estate. To date, nearly $575,000 has come in from Miss Lois’ estate. That is an incredible blessing and an incredible opportunity. And, like most opportunities, it can be very good or very bad. You see, one thing the Enemy loves to do is sow discord among God’s people. And, money seems to be one of the primary tools he uses to create division.

I know of a church that was ripped apart when a member left them a $7 million estate. The church degenerated into fighting and squabbling over how to use the funds. Today, that church still has a lot of that money. But, they have lost half their members and all their influence in the community.

We are committed to that not happening at First Baptist Church Park Street. That is why we are beginning with prayer. (If you have not done so already, be sure to pick up a prayer guide in the foyer or at the Welcome Desk.)

Why are we praying for 40 days? That’s a great question. The number 40, particularly when connected to times of testing, shows up quite a bit in the Bible. For example, in the Old Testament, when God destroyed the earth with water, He caused it to rain 40 days and 40 nights (Genesis 7:12). Moses was on Mount Sinai for 40 days and 40 nights (Exodus 24:18). Moses interceded on Israel’s behalf for 40 days and 40 nights (Deuteronomy 9:18, 25). Goliath taunted Saul’s army for 40 days before David arrived to slay him (1 Samuel 17:16). When Elijah fled from Jezebel, he traveled 40 days and 40 nights to Mt. Horeb (1 Kings 19:8). And, in the New Testament, Jesus was tempted for 40 days and 40 nights (Matthew 4:2). There were 40 days between Jesus’ resurrection and ascension (Acts 1:3).

Whether there is any special symbolism with the number 40 is a matter of debate. It is clear, however, that God tends to use that number to describe times of great testing and trial for His people. How we go about utilizing this tremendous gift is a matter of “testing and trial.” We have many things we could do and many things we might like to do. The question is, what does God want us to do? What can we do that will honor Him the most? What can we do that will help us impact our city, county and the ends of the earth to the greatest degree possible? I don’t know the answer to those questions….yet. That is why we pray.

As you prepare your hearts for worship this Sunday, please read Mark 3:20-30 as we continue our new series “reMARKable,” a study of the gospel of Mark. I hope to see you Sunday with a smile on your face, a Bible in your hand, and an unchurched friend at your side.

It’s a joy to be your pastor,

Pastor Rob
Eph 3:20-21

40 Days of Prayer for Team Lois
Let’s steward this gift well

A beloved FBC family member passed away and left a sizable gift to the Church. We want it directed by the Lord to continue our legacy of innovation.

“Team Lois” is asking the Church family to join with them for 40 days of prayer to make sure we maintain the unity of the spirit around this gift.

Pick up your prayer guide Sunday and join with the Church in prayer!
