Fall 2019 Groups

All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.

These are the words of Jesus. We go, baptize, and teach, all to make disciples. Not pointing to us, but pointing generations to Jesus. We do this in worship, in relationships, in service, but also in growing and learning about Jesus in all things.

All Fall groups begin in September, see group for days and times

Groups with Registrations

These are the Fall 2019 Bible groups requiring registration. Each group has individual descriptions, requirements, and costs.

1 Samuel, Precept-to-Precept (for Women)

Tuesday Mornings from 9:30-11:30 am

God’s search for a man after His own heart

From judges to kings, from the departure of God’s glory to the assurance of His help, from inquiring of the Lord to inquiring of a medium – this book of contrasts sets before us the importance of a life of obedience and how it’s lived out in the midst of interpersonal conflicts.

Taught by Precept-trained leaders Caitlin Newell and Darla Rose

1 Samuel goes through the book, precept-by-precept style. We’re offering 2 homework options for this study within the same group.

  • You may take the “In and Out” Study that will require an average of 3 hours of homework a week (a $14 book is needed for this option.)
  • You also have the option of taking “Precept Upon Precept” which will require an average of 5 hours of homework a week (an $18 book is needed for this option)

Both of these studies follow the same guidelines and order for 1 Samuel, the Precept Upon Precept course simply goes a little deeper. Discussion will mainly be focused on the information in the Precept Upon Precept book. Childcare may be available, that option is shown after you register.

Teach me How to Study the Bible in 28 Days (for Women)

Tuesday Mornings from 9:30-11:30 am

Teach me How to study the bible in 28 days

This is a practical, hands on, learn by doing group! You will learn the inductive method of studying God’s Word, and you will discover truth for yourself by practicing the principles of observation, interpretation, and application. This study, which can be used for individual study, will be used as a group study this fall and will be taught over 6 weeks starting on September 10, 2019.

“Knowledge that is self-discovered is stored in the deepest part of the mind and remains the longest in the memory. There is no jewel more precious than that which you have mined yourself.”

Here are just a few of the benefits you will receive in taking this class:

  • You will learn to recognize key words, themes and concepts.
  • You will discover the main point of a passage.
  • You will learn to slow down and actually understand what you are reading.
  • You will discover God’s purpose in a passage or book and apply the meaning to your everyday life.
  • You will develop a Biblical worldview and a Biblical systemic theology.

Those registering need only to bring some colored pencils, a pen, and a prayerful heart. We will be completing much of the work in class, with just a small amount of homework between sessions.

This study will be led by Sally Nisley and Lyn Cooke, the cost of the book is $12.00. After the completion of Teach Me, a possible opportunity for further may be provided.

Trail Life (for Boys)

Wednesday nights from 6-7

Christ-Centered. Boy-Focused.

Trail Life USA is a Church-Based, Christ-Centered, Boy-Focused mentoring and discipleship journey that speaks to the heart of a boy. Established on timeless values derived from the Bible and set in the context of outdoor adventure, boys from Kindergarten through 6th grade are engaged in a Troop setting by male mentors where they are challenged to grow in character, understand their purpose, serve their community, and develop practical leadership skills to carry out the mission for which they were created. Our Troop VA0725 meets Wednesday Nights from 6-7 pm.

Too many boys are turning to virtual worlds of television, video games, digital media, and the internet to find realms they can conquer and areas where they can excel. The result of this virtual conquest is often apathy, apparent rebellion, or outright resistance to real-world challenge.

Trail Life USA is an environment where boys thrive! Adults are equipped to lead a program in a structured outdoor environment where boys are engaged in real-world challenge and experience camping, hiking, and fishing; they develop skills in in riflery, archery, and canoeing;  and learn character and leadership in a practical hands-on manner that is naturally engaging.

In the outdoors, the experience of adults is never obsolete, boys find mentors, fathers and sons connect, important relationships are fostered, and boys find opportunity to achieve significant accomplishment.

Mom to Mom

every other Thursday morning, 9:30 a.m.-11:30 am

Mom to Mom is a Biblically-based program

Mom to Mom is designed around the concept of older moms teaching and encouraging younger moms in their relationships with their husbands and children. It’s a model that has stood the test of time. It includes quality instruction in parenting, small group discussion, and the interaction of more experienced mothers with younger moms.

Our group meets September-May every other Thursday morning, 9:30 a.m.-11:30 am. The meetings offer a variety of ways to get to know one another through table discussions, mom nights out, and Bible study. Our church provides our moms with great childcare for infant-K in FIRSTkids where children receive a Bible lesson and opportunity for center-guided play where all workers are background checked.

Pastor Rob's Book Study

Wednesday nights, 6-7 pm

The Power of Together

Experience the power of together…together

Most of us have never experienced how helpful and necessary biblical relational environments are to discipleship. This class will provide a 12 week study to uncover the core of true discipleship with an in-depth, biblical look at how Jesus always invited people into relationship with himself. We will be utilizing The Power of Together, by pastor and author Jim Putman, as the basis for our conversations.

6 PM Wednesdays in the fellowship hall. Books will be provided for all those who wish to read and contribute to the conversation.

Senior Adult Bible Study

Tuesdays from 1:15 pm – 2:30 pm

pointing seniors to Jesus

Gray hair is a crown of glory; it is gained in a righteous life. (Proverbs 16:31)

Society is afraid of growing older. But in God’s eyes, it’s a special time of life, and at First Baptist we celebrate this season, while recognizing the special challenges seniors face.
We give seniors opportunities for spiritual enrichment and growth. We invite you on interesting, entertaining (and affordable!) trip venues. We also make sure to be support and a resource to senior adults.

Join us on Tuesdays from 1:15 pm – 2:30 pm, and monthly for our lunches

Wednesday Night: ReFuel

Students can be dropped off at 6:00. The night begins with a time for hanging out with friends, playing games like: Gaga ball, Ping Pong, Air Hockey, etc. Then we come together for a prayer time and a lesson from the Word. There is often time afterward for more hanging out. This is a great time to come and connect.
