Winter/Spring 2020 Groups

All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.

These are the words of Jesus. We go, baptize, and teach, all to make disciples. Not pointing to us, but pointing generations to Jesus. We do this in worship, in relationships, in service, but also in growing and learning about Jesus in all things.

Turning Your Heart Towards God (for Women)

Tuesday Mornings from 9:30-11:30 am

Turning Your Heart Towards God

In this powerful study, you will gain a fresh understanding of what it looks like to align your life with God’s priorities. Here you will discover anew why the word blessed means walking in the fullness and satisfaction of God, no matter your circumstances. As you look closely at the meaning behind each of the Beatitudes, you will see how these truths can shape your choices every day–and bring you closer to the heart of God.

This is a 6-week study from March 31st through May 5th, taught by Caitlin Newell and Darla Rose . It is a focused, self-contained study to guide you into God’s Word one topic at a time, with no homework. The cost of the study is $5. Childcare may be available, that option is shown in the registration.

Colossians and Philemon – Precept Upon Precept (for Women)

Tuesday Mornings from 9:30-11:30 am

Colossians and Philemon – Precept Upon Precept

What does it mean to be “complete in Christ”? Is Christ your “all in all” – does He meet all your needs? Don’t let anyone delude you with man-made philosophies or traditions that contradict the Word of God.

Taught by Precept-trained leaders Lyn Cooke and Joan Smith

Colossians and Philemon go through the books, precept-by-precept style, which requires an average of 5 hours of homework a week (a $21 book is needed.)

Childcare may be available, that option is shown after you register.

Colossians and Philemon

Overcomer (for women)

Wednesdays from 6-7 pm

Taught by Darla Rose

Many people feel they are less than who God says they are. We get our identity from our careers, our political positions, our roles in the family, and a number of other lesser things. However, what is most true about us is that we are made by a God who loves us, and the gospel can bring us into a relationship with Him. When we understand who God is, we more fully understand who we are. This small group study uses clips from the film Overcomer to examine how we determine our identity and how we can find our true identity in Christ.

Cost is $10. Free childcare may be available, that option is shown after you register.

AWANA (co-ed for kids)

AWANA has three groups:
  • Cubbies for children who are 3 and 4 years old (by 30 September) who meet from 5:15-6:45 pm.

Trail Life (for Boys)

Wednesday nights from 6-7

Christ-Centered. Boy-Focused.

Trail Life USA is a Church-Based, Christ-Centered, Boy-Focused mentoring and discipleship journey that speaks to the heart of a boy. Established on timeless values derived from the Bible and set in the context of outdoor adventure, boys from Kindergarten through 6th grade are engaged in a Troop setting by male mentors where they are challenged to grow in character, understand their purpose, serve their community, and develop practical leadership skills to carry out the mission for which they were created. Our Troop VA0725 meets Wednesday Nights from 6-7 pm.

Too many boys are turning to virtual worlds of television, video games, digital media, and the internet to find realms they can conquer and areas where they can excel. The result of this virtual conquest is often apathy, apparent rebellion, or outright resistance to real-world challenge.

Trail Life USA is an environment where boys thrive! Adults are equipped to lead a program in a structured outdoor environment where boys are engaged in real-world challenge and experience camping, hiking, and fishing; they develop skills in in riflery, archery, and canoeing;  and learn character and leadership in a practical hands-on manner that is naturally engaging.

In the outdoors, the experience of adults is never obsolete, boys find mentors, fathers and sons connect, important relationships are fostered, and boys find opportunity to achieve significant accomplishment.

Mission Friends (for Preschoolers)

Wednesday nights from 6-7

Fun and games with a purpose. For Preschoolers.

At FBC, we know one one encourages others like kids do. So we encourage kids with lots of fun & games & crafts for a purpose: Preschoolers will learn about missionaries, pastors, and servants of the church…and we then write notes, cards, and drawings to encourage those serving in ministry through those offices.

Mom to Mom (for women)

every other Thursday morning, 9:30 a.m.-11:30 am

Mom to Mom is a Biblically-based program

Mom to Mom is designed around the concept of older moms teaching and encouraging younger moms in their relationships with their husbands and children. It’s a model that has stood the test of time. It includes quality instruction in parenting, small group discussion, and the interaction of more experienced mothers with younger moms.

Our group meets September-May every other Thursday morning, 9:30 a.m.-11:30 am. The meetings offer a variety of ways to get to know one another through table discussions, mom nights out, and Bible study. Our church provides our moms with great childcare for infant-K in FIRSTkids where children receive a Bible lesson and opportunity for center-guided play where all workers are background checked.

Ongoing Groups

We’ve got groups for everyone. Above are short-term groups that require registration. Here are the ongoing groups you can jump in anytime:
Sunday School

At FBC, everything starts with the Word of God: the Bible. Because to know God, we need to hear from Him. While everything else changes, the Word of God doesn’t. In this broken world, we choose to live our life based on the one thing that doesn’t change every time society does. We do this, together, gathering and reading God’s word, asking His Holy Spirit to teach us and guide us. Our primary way to do this is Sunday school. While we live our lives imperfectly like everyone else, we grow in a loving relationship with God and one another as revealed in His word by His Spirit.

Senior Adult Bible Study

Tuesdays from 1:15 pm – 2:30 pm

pointing seniors to Jesus

Gray hair is a crown of glory; it is gained in a righteous life. (Proverbs 16:31)

Society is afraid of growing older. But in God’s eyes, it’s a special time of life, and at First Baptist we celebrate this season, while recognizing the special challenges seniors face.
We give seniors opportunities for spiritual enrichment and growth. We invite you on interesting, entertaining (and affordable!) trip venues. We also make sure to be support and a resource to senior adults.

Join us on Tuesdays for Bible study from 1:15 pm – 2:30 pm, and monthly for our lunches
